MICHAEL PHELPS WORKOUT AND DIET

How is this guy doing this – he jumps from the starting block; swims for couple of minutes and the gold medal appears on his chest – so easy, isn’t it?

We are talking about the greatest Olympian of all time: 

MICHAEL PHELPS DIET 

If we peek into his everyday routine we can find his key to success. We will start from early in the morning to see what does Michael Phelps have for BREAKFAST

Three fried egg sandwiches loaded with cheese; fried onions; tomatoes; lettuce and some mayonnaise. Besides there are two cups of coffee and five egg omelette which is just the half of the breakfast. Then breakfast continues with bowl of grits, three slices French toast with powder sugar and 3 chocolate chip pancakes. This is about 4000 calories total.

LUNCH – he eats a pound of pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise all with white bread. He drinks energy drinks containing 1000 calories, alone. 

DINNER – Phelps consumes one pound of pasta, entire pizza and more energy drinks. Now this is total of 12000 calories a day. Wow! Are we talking about another Phelps- best in competitive eating? Of course not ! But, how does he do it?  Is it possible for Phelps to have this shape or is this healthy for Phelps? The leading expert in sports medicine, Mark Klion from Mount Sinai Medical Center from New York says -eating game all comes down to basic math. Train as hard as Phelps, eat less than him – you will burn calories and lose weight.

Phelps trains a lot; his body burns thousands of calories a day; and according to this,Phelps has a very fast metabolism which allows him to eat so much.

An athlete like him has to worry about restore the depleted calories. If he doesn’t, body won’t recover, muscles won’t recover and of course there won’t be adequate energy for him for his next event.

MICHAEL PHELPS WORKOUT 

Phelps trains for hours; he swims nearly 50 miles a week. He trains twice a day – total of five to six hours and six days a week. He trains even more major competition is near.

Michael uses waterproof headphones while swimming; listening to music can be fun and relaxing while workout. Long swims improve his stamina and he does other exercises  to improve his swimming speed as well.

His height of 6’4 and his 6’7 arm reach  is what makes him a perfect swimmer. His legs are short for his height and it makes him even more dominant in swimming pool. Also his knees are double jointed and his feet can rotate 15 degrees more that average person and that making them function like flippers.

Phelps uses different equipment and techniques to become better. He strives to be the best. Vertical and underwater kicking is exercise he does during  workout. He does sculling- stroke in which a person moves arms back and forth in small figure eights. This is in order to maintain his feel for the water.

Training paddles, kick boards, pull buoys and snorkels are just several things in his training equipment.  All of this training gear can make leg muscles work better; give intensity to gluts and upper body and abs. Also, this equipment can be of great help in training after an injury. He also goes to gym 3 days/ week to lift weights.  On other hand he favors body-weight exercises -push-ups and weighted pull ups to boost his muscular strength as well as maintain his vitality. Phelps has a well balanced workout plan. That makes his body-weight is optimal for swimming and hit is said -less weight you have to drag in the water the faster you can swim.
